The Michigan office of the Secretary of State administers the laws regarding buying and selling used cars. Here’s a handy guide for selling a car in Michigan.
Step 1 - Gather Documents
Certificate of Title
If there’s a lien on the title, you’ll need to have it released before you sell. The lienholder needs to sign the lien release.
Complete the title assignment:
- Odometer statement.
- Date of sale.
- Selling price.
- Buyer’s name and address.
- Buyer signature.
- Your signature.
If you lost the title or it’s damaged, you can get a duplicate at a Michigan Secretary of State branch office.
Bill of Sale
Michigan laws protect you from liability if the buyer:
- Uses the car in a crime.
- Abandons the car.
- Gets a ticket.
But you need to provide a written record that you sold the vehicle. Even though a bill of sale isn’t required in Michigan, it’s the best way to show proof.
When you list your car with PrivateAuto, you get a bill of sale form you can fill out and sign straight from the app.
Vehicle History Report
Although it’s the buyer’s responsibility to research the car’s history, you can show that you are a trustworthy seller by providing a vehicle history report.
When you sign up for PrivateAuto Premium, you get a report from AutoCheck at no extra cost.
Step 2 - Schedule a Test Drive
When you sell your car with PrivateAuto, you get our free test drive scheduling tool.
Choose a location where you want to meet with potential buyers and pick out times you’re available to meet.
Step 3 - Finalize the Sale
If you can, complete the sale with the buyer at a branch office of the Michigan Secretary of State. If that’s not possible, keep a copy of all documents for at least 18 months.
Remove the license plates before you complete the sale. You may transfer them to another vehicle that you own.
With PrivateAuto Premium, you can securely transfer funds for the sale of the car.
With PrivateAuto you can sell your car like a pro.
