New York has its own rules for selling a used car. This guide will take you through the steps.
Step 1 - Gather Documents
Certificate of Title
Complete the transfer of ownership section of the certificate.
- Buyer name and address.
- Selling price.
- Date of sale.
- Odometer reading (cars 10 years old or less).
- Damage disclosure.
- Signatures of you and the buyer.
Your PrivateAuto listing includes forms specific to New York. You can complete and sign them straight from the app.
Bill of Sale
New York law requires a bill of sale (Form MV-912) for any title transfer, even if it’s a gift.
Vehicle History Report
It’s the buyer’s responsibility to research the car’s history.
But you can show the value of your car, especially if it’s never been in an accident and you kept up with maintenance. We recommend AutoCheck, the report with the best value.
Step 2 - Arrange a Test Drive
PrivateAuto gives you access to the test drive scheduling tool. You only need to choose a place to meet your buyer and select days and times you’re available.
Step 3 - Complete the Sale
Remove the license plates before finalizing the sale. You can transfer them to another car or return them to the DMV for a partial refund.
The buyer will need to register the car and apply for a new title.
He or she will also need to pay the sales tax or show proof of exemption.
